Even in the dead of night (which is relative considering whether one is planetside or in deep space en route to a destination) the galley is the heart of the ship. It wasn't unusual for an insomniac crew member to sit in solitude in the galley, absorbing the homey feel of lingering food scents and indeterminate cooking odors. During mining runs, it was possible to find many crew members lingering over one more cup of coffee or grabbing one more bite of food before trekking out to the more hostile environs of the outer belt planets and planetoids.
It was possible to die on a planet, so that few extra moments in the galley fortified that fleeting moment of home and hearth, something that was especially important to the sanity of the crew.
