Thank you for purchasing the Modular Bay package from CGbytes.com The Modular Bay assembled parts and stand alone parts will be placed in your figures library under the category: Modular Bay The Modular Bay is designed to fit beneath the Frontier Station, also available at cgbytes.com, and serves as a large cargo/storage bay or shuttle/ship bay. There are 2 pre-assembled bay versions in the package, one has the exterior cargo doors version and the other has fully enclosed walls version. Because this package is meant to be customisable, the modular bay is made up of several parented figures instead of being one full figure. The advantage of this setup is to allow you to create your own custom setup tailored to your needs. Another advantage is the ability to remove or move walls and items for getting the best camera angles and visual shots. All the figures are parented to the "floor" figure. If you move the floor figure, all elements in the scene will move with it. "null" Parent figures: There are special figures in the scene that look like small diamonds. These figures are the base/parent figures of sub groups of parented figures, for example, each level of the catwalks is parented to a null figure, you can move/rotate an entire catwalk level by moving the null parent it is parented to. The elevator shaft and catwalk levels are each parented to a "null" figure in the scene. Wall modules: There are 2 exterior wall modules, one is the solid wall segment and the other is the Bay Wall Door segment. The wall segments are actually 1/8 of the total circumfrence of the whole bay, 8 solid wall segments are parented to the floor to create a whole bay. The Bay Wall Door segment would be the equivalent of 3 of the solid wall segments. This method allows you to remove walls for better camera angles and shots or allows you to remove several wall segments for a grand interior scene. The Bay Wall Door segment has 4 sliding door segments that can be rotated out to accomode the width of the LCV shuttle sold at cgbytes.com as well. The solid wall module has 3 "doorcaps" imbedded into the walls. These caps can be turned off to create an actual hole in the wall that will fit the corridor module of the Frontier Station or the Modular Elevator (sold separately). Simply click on one of the caps and use the properties dials to hide the cap. Catwalk modules: There are 4 catwalk modules. One is a central catwalk base that can be situated at the center of the bay and have catwalks extending from the center to the perimeter of the bay. There is a pre-assembled module parented to a null base that has this setup. The next 2 catwalks mudules are a narrow and wider straight catwalk segments, stack these end to end as you need them. The final catwalk module is a slightly curved catwalk segment that is meant to run along the interior perimeter of the Modular Bay. There is a pre-assembled perimeter catwalk figure that is parented to a null base. The central catwalk module and the curved perimeter catwalk module have 2 or 3 part railings that can be hidden depending on whether you want to have straight catwalk segments intersect them. The railings can be hidden with the properies dial. The centeral catwalk and straight sections have 2 versions available, one with a solid floor and one with a trans-mapped grate floor. Interior Elevator Module: There is a small elevator/lift figure set that you can add additional shaft frames/segments to. The pre-configured modular bays already have the elevator installed. If you wish to use this elevator in another scene, simply add the elevator base, adjust the height of the support rails/shaft and add additional shaft frames to desired height. Parent all shaft frames to each other. Support Columns: There are 2 addition support column figures in the package, use these as desired. One of the support shafts has adjustable support beams that stick out at a 90 degree angle, these can be used to support catwalks or other equipment. Bay Floor Grid: The bay floor grid is a thin floor figure with a higher resolution texture map. This is the figure all other figures in the scene are parented / sub-parented to. Bay Roof Grid: This is a frame-like grid figure used as an interesting ceiling feature, there are 4 large bay lamps parented to ceiling grid. Bay Roof or Floor: This is a single figure that serves as a bottom or top cap to the modular bay. If you wish to create a long shaft scene, you can remove the roof/floor module and stack several wall segments on top of each other. Module 6: Module 6 is an octagonal shaped office/control room with one of the walls serving as a door wall. This rooms walls, ceiling and floor can be turned off for good camera angles and shots. The control room is intended to sit at the top of the Modular Bay beneath the ceiling. It can be accessed with a series of catwalks. (there is a pre-configured catwalk/module 6 already assembled in the 2 versions of the Modular Bay). You can also attach the crane figure beneath the Module 6. Crane Assembly: The crane assembly can sit beneath module 6 and be used to lift heavy equipment. The trolly on the crane moves back and forth, the cables under the trolly can be adjusted for height. The Carriage at the bottom of the cables has completely adjustable gripping bars/handles. There is also a special scaffold figure that can be parented to the carriage and be used to lift heavy loads up and down the modular bay. The long arm of the crane can also be moved back and forth. Bay Module Connector: This is a cylindrical figure that can be used to connect the roof of the modular bay to the bottoms of the frontier stations "module 4" figure. Use 4 of them, placed one each beneath the frontier stations "module 4". Modular Elevator: Sold separately, can be used with the Modular Bay and Frontier Station. This package can be used to connect the Modular Bay to the Frontier Station via an exterior elevator system. There is a pre-assembled elevator assembly included with the Modular Elevator that fits all three of the Modular Bays solid wall modules doorcaps and extends up to "module 4" of the Frontier Station. Parenting Parts for your own custom Modular Bay: You can create your own custom bay designs by parenting parts to one another. Under the "FIGURES" menu at the top of your screne, use the "change figure parent" button and select the figure you want to parent your currently selected part to. After you have parented the part, move the parent part to make sure they are stuck together. Displacement maps: To create the effect of protruding panels and "greebles" on the hulls and individual parts, I've created a general purpose displacement map and assigned it to the "displacement" node in the material room for each part. Displacement maps work like bump mapping. The only drawback to displacement maps is that they are a "fixed" value on the material. If you scale the model/figure/part up larger, the displacement map becomes "weaker" or more "faint" during a render. If you rescale a one of the items in your scene, be sure to increase the materials displacement value higher or lower by the same amount you scaled your item up. Rendering Preferences: I have found that the Firefly rendering engine does not handle displacement maps as efficiently as the Poser 4 rendering engine. I prefer to render with the Poser 4 rendering engine with the "Ignore shader trees" option 'unchecked'. This will allow the Poser 4 render engine to render the displacement maps correctly and still use most of the shader trees for the other items in your scene (should you have any). If you use the firefly engine, be sure to set your firefly preferences to render in the "professional" setting. Lighting: In general, I have 3 lights in my scenes, 2 of them do not cast shadows, the third light does. This will help eliminate some of the shadowing problems that most people run into. You can turn off a lights shadow casting with the lights properties dialog box. The Modular Bay is designed to match all my other sci-fi products available at www.cgbytes.com. What I have to offer is a large collection and assortment of consistantly designed elements. The Modular Bay was created by Davo for use in PARSECS Universe and is being distributed/sold at CGbytes.com. The PARSECS universe is a new Science-Fiction action adventure universe.
